WHEN SUNNY GETS BLUE

In 2011 I did a very intense animation project. I drew nonstop frame by frame for 2 weeks. This resulted in an undiagnosable injury in both my hands that caused pain whenever I wrote, drew or typed on the computer. I still carry this pain until today, and learned to live with it, but at the time I felt fear and anxiety that I will not be able to write or draw again.

During that period, I was a Film MFA student and started thinking about my thesis film. I played around with many ideas, but one day I wrote something that came out of the impression the feelings my pain raised (you can read it in on my story blog here).

I decided to turn that into my thesis film, “When Sunny Gets Blue”, which is a jazz standard I was learning how to play when my hands started to hurt. It became the symbol for my pain – since I stopped playing the piano while playing that song, and the anthem to that time in my life.

For all its flaws, I love this film, I love what it represents, and the process it took me through. For me it’s one of the pure pieces of art I ever created.
