A Christmas Tale

Updated: Apr 27, 2019

This little short short story I wrote for Christmas 2010. Liked the idea so much that in 2013 I adapted it to a little holiday animation...

Happy holidays, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

A Christmas Tale

By Oded Naaman

It was the night before Christmas, and I was sitting on the stairs in front of my building, enjoying the fresh cold air.

Then suddenly I heard jingle bells above me. I looked up, and to my surprise not far away, Santa Clause’s slate flew over my head and landed gently on the ground.

He jumped off it, picked up a big package, wrapped with a huge ribbon, and walked towards me.

“Ho Ho Ho!” he leaned over me “Merry Christmas!”.

“Merry Christmas to you too, Santa!” I smiled at him.

“This is for you!” He handed me the box while smiling, jolly as ever.

“Thank you!” I was excited “And here I thought I wasn’t going to get any gifts!”

“Why, have you been naughty?” He winked at me.

“No.” I answered. “Then why?” He was still smiling his big smile.

“Because I’m Jewish” I said, “You know?”

Santa stood there for a second, blinking, motionless.

Then he snatched the box out of my hands, sneered at me, and walked back to his sled.

I watched him climb back onto it, and fly away, with his bells jingling.

It started snowing.

And as I was taking a deep breath of the wintery cold air, I suddenly felt the holiday spirit.

I smiled.
